It is intended that a national household travel survey will provide essential travel behaviour data to support the NTA's transport planning role and for the maintenance of various transport models. The Authority currently operates and maintains a multi-modal transport model for the GDA. The model was previously maintained by the DTO and came into the ownership of the NTA when the Authority was established in December 2009 and subsumed the DTO. The GDA model covers two time periods โ a 3-hour AM peak period (7 to 10) and a one hour off peak period (2 to 3) in the afternoon. While the trip assignment component of the current model represents trips in the AM peak and afternoon off-peak only, the demand model component requires data on all-day travel patterns and journey purposes. The model was updated in 2008 to incorporate the 2006 travel and Census data. The next update is scheduled for late 2012, to incorporate the travel and demographic data from the 2011 Census. The Census will provide comprehensive data on the patterns of travel to work and education that are the dominant journey purposes in the AM Peak. However, the model update will also require travel data on other all-day journey purposes โ including trips to shopping, leisure, business etc., and the primary objective of the household survey is to provide this data. It is all intended that the data will be used to maintain similar multi-modal transport models that have been developed for other regional cities in Ireland, including Cork, Limerick and Galway. The NTA also intend to use the data in the development of a national transport model. Contract notice (2011-12-23) Object Scope of the procurement
Title: survey services
Quantity or scope:
The main aim of the national household travel survey will be to obtain factual data on travel behaviour throughout the country on a typical day. This data will include the number of trips being made daily, the mode and time of travel, the distance travelled and the journey purpose. It is intended that this factual travel data will be obtained through the completion of travel diaries. In order to obtain a good sample of peopleโs travel behaviour on weekdays and weekends, it is intended that each travel diary will record trips for one weekday (Monday to Friday) and one weekend day (Saturday or Sunday). However, it is a requirement that the final dataset obtained from the survey will contain a representative sample of journeys on all days of the week.In addition to the completion of travel diaries, it is intended that the surveys will include the completion of a household questionnaire. The purpose of the questionnaire will be to obtain essential background information about each household โ including household size and structure, car ownership, socio-economic grouping, etc. It will also include information about each individual member of the household โ in order to cross reference with the travel diaries and to facilitate cross tabulation with National Census data. The Authority will require that for each household participating in the survey, travel diaries will be completed for all household members over the age of 4. Escorted trips where adults accompany children under the age of 4 must also be recorded as part of the escortโs travel diary. As the travel data will be a key input into the development of a multi-modal national transport model, it is critical that the travel diaries obtain a representative sample of longer distance trips and trips by modes other than by car (e.g. trip by public transport). The full scope of the contract and the specifications of service requirements is set out in the document entitled "National Transport Authority requests for tenders for undertaking a national household travel survey" available on www.etenders.gov.ie.
