The Nature Restoration Law (Regulation (EU) 2024/1991) is the first continent-wide, comprehensive law of its kind. It is a key element of the EU Biodiversity Strategy, which sets binding targets to restore degraded ecosystems, in particular those with the most potential to capture and store carbon and to prevent and reduce the impact of natural disasters. The NPWS is coordinating the development of a national Nature Restoration Plan (NRP) arising from the Regulation, to be submitted to the EU Commission by 1 September 2026. The Plan will be a comprehensive list of measures and actions, focusing on achieving set targets across 7 varied ecosystems within a strict deadline. An Independent Advisory Committee (IAC) has been established to provide recommendations relating to the development and content of the NRP. The IAC will oversee all aspects of the Plan. This will include a comprehensive evaluation of existing plans and policies that contribute to Nature Restoration, including key government policies, in particular policies with a Nature-focussed agenda and other EU legislation impacted or assisted by nature restoration
