Scientific and technical support to assist in the implementation of national conservation and restoration approaches for Ireland's raised bogs
The work involves the provision of scientific and technical support to the Department of Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs (DAHRRGA) (henceforth the โDepartmentโ) to assist in the implementation of national conservation and management approaches for Ireland's raised bogs, focusing particularly on those chosen for designation as Special Areas of Conservation and Natural Heritage Areas. This is to assist Ireland in meeting its international and national legal obligations, particularly in finding a final resolution to the EU infringement case in respect of reversing the decline in the conservation status of Active Raised Bog due to turf-cutting within raised bog SACs.
The Department provides the legislative and policy framework for the conservation of nature and biodiversity in Ireland. It also oversees its implementation, based on good science, with particular emphasis on the protection of habitats and species. (Refer to RfT).
