As part of the Vartry Water Supply Project โ€” Water to Callowhill Link Contract, Irish Water plan to replace the existing Vartry to Callowhill Tunnel and Callowhill BPT with a high lift pumping station, 4 km pipeline, summit BPT and energy recovery turbine / BPT at Callowhill.
The planned works are necessary to ensure compliance with EU Directives, Irish National Standards and Regulations relating to treated water for human consumption.

The planned works are necessary to ensure compliance with EU Directives, Irish National Standards and Regulations relating to treated water for human consumption.
It is intended that the works will be implemented under a Design and Build Contract.
The contract consists of the design, construction, testing and commissioning a new 4 km trunk main between the existing Vartry Water Treatment Plant and Callowhill Sites.
The Contract primarily consists of the following:
Design-Build:
โ€” Design and construction of a new circa 80 MLD / day high lift pumping station with circa 900 kW / hour motive power;
โ€” Design and construction of a new 4 km long 1 200 mm diameter pipeline;
โ€” Design and construction of a summit break pressure tank of circa 1 000 m
โ€” Design and construction of a 450 KWhr hydroelectric turbine facility and discharge break pressure tank of circa 1000 m
โ€” Decommissioning the existing Vartry to Callowhill tunnel and break pressure tank.
