Multiple-Working System for Narrow-Gauge Industrial Trains
Bord Na Mona operates more than 180 locomotives on over 700 km of 3-foot gauge industrial railway network across its operations located in the Irish midlands. 80 of these locomotives are engaged in heavy-duty peat haulage. Of these 50 locomotives are scheduled to be refurbished with new engines, electrical control and telemetry systems over the next 2 years. The first of these upgraded locomotives will enter operational testing in May 2016. To increase the versatility and cost effectiveness of the refurbished locomotive fleet, Bord Na Mona now seeks proposals for linked multiple working of trains. Each train comprises 1 locomotive coupled to 12 to 20 wagons. The rail transport system works on permanent and temporary track, interfacing with public roads via level crossings and is utilised to haul in excess of 3 000 000 tonnes of peat per year for power generation, domestic heating and horticultural products. A linked multiple train will comprise 2 (or more) trains coupled together and working under the control of 1 of the constituent locomotives.
