Excavation work at archaeological sites

Title attributed to the contract by the contracting authority: N7 Castletown to Nenagh Road Scheme Contract Advance Archaeological Works. Works are to be carried out along the route of the proposed N7 Castletown to Nenagh national road scheme from a junction on the present N7 Nenagh Bypass to the east of Nenagh, North Tipperary and will run for 35,2 km of centre line chainage, plus all link roads and minor roads within the boundaries of the scheme as shown on the contract drawings, to a tie in to the M7/M8 Portlaoise-Castletown Scheme to the south of Borris-in-Ossory in County Laois. Phase 1 will cover the investigation of the 15 Archaeological Areas over 2 contracts. All works including mobilisation, on-site works and reporting must be completed within 16 weeks (for wetland on Contract 2 Phase 1, areas of 30 m trenching may be re-arranged to be completed April-September). Licensing of the Work will take place under Ministerial Directions, details of which shall be issued to the successful Tenderer. Phase 2 will entail the rescue excavation of any or all sites identified during the Phase 1 works and the production of a basic assessment report showing overall site interpretation and checked indexes of contexts, finds, graphics and samples. A number of archaeological, architectural and riverine sites and potential sites as detailed in the EIS will be completed during Phase 2. Phase 3 is to include all off-site post-excavation works as defined in the Specification. Normally this will be the main reporting and analysis phase of works (to 'Publishable Standard') which will be completed when all Reporting requirements are complete and all archives are ready to present to the State.
