It is Iarnród Éireann policy to provide a friction or fixed buffer stops at the termination of every passenger running line, including bay platform lines and on freight lines and sidings where deemed necessary. A friction type buffer stop is one specially designed to absorb the energy of a moving train. Friction elements, rubbing on the railhead, help to dissipate the energy as the buffer is moved backwards. Friction buffers are installed to safeguard people, both on the ground and in trains, including passengers, staff and the public, against serious injury, should a train over-run the end of a line. These buffers are also provided where necessary to safeguard rolling stock and property against serious damage. The Supplier must nominate and submit all applied codes and standards applied for the design, installation and maintenance of the proposed type of friction or fixed buffer stop. The Supplier shall submit as part of his tender, detailed dimensioned drawings and all relevant material information of all components of his system. A copy of Iarnród Éireanns technical specification for friction type and fixed type buffer stops can be requested in advance of tender.
