ESB Generation and Trading Hydro Operations team operates four (4) river Hydropower schemes (220MW) and one (1) pumped storage station (292MW) on the island of Ireland. The schemes are located in different parts of the country and each scheme has its own local operations and maintenance craft and engineering staff. Significant changeout of staff has occurred in the last number of years and is due to continue over the 2024 due to age profile and retirements. Basic Hydropower Training is required for all recruits and technical training is required for the large number of Operations, Craft and Engineering staff recruited in the last years and to be recruited in 2024. The ability is also needed to train the smaller number of new recruits post-2024 as they individually come onboard. Two levels of training are envisaged. First level is intended to be suitable for all persons working in Hydro Operations including craft, engineering, operations, admin, civil works, dam safety and management. It is intended to ensure a base level of understanding of Hydropower, major hydro components, general operations, risks and concerns. It is envisaged that each attendee would follow a directed structure of already created online training to completion in their own time. Second level is intended to be directed at technical staff in operations, craft and engineering roles. It is expected to offer a deeper understanding of the function, design, maintenance, monitoring, failure and repair of hydro components, systems and balance of plant, appropriate to the roles of the trainees in the stations. It is envisaged that attendees would follow a set programme of in-person delivered classroom training modules appropriate to their role in the power station. An ESB trainer is to be trained, and provided with suitable materials, as part of this training in order that ESB may internally train the smaller number of recruits in future years.
