The National Monuments Service of the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage has responsibility for the formulation and implementation of policy relating to the protection of Ireland's archaeological heritage and is committed to conserving and managing our unique built heritage for the benefit of present and future generations, as a support to economic renewal and sustainable employment, and in compliance with legal obligations. Archaeological excavations carried out by the National Monuments Service at Dublin Castle have provided information critical to our understanding of the development of this premier national monument and have also thrown light on the Viking settlement and early formation of the medieval walled town of Dublin. The excavations, directed by Dr. Ann Lynch and Conleth Manning were carried out between 1985 and 1987 to facilitate a major building programme for the Irish EU Presidency of 1989 and were among the largest-scale excavations carried out in Ireland up to that time. A summary account has been published in Medieval Dublin II (ed. Seรกn Duffy, 2001). The results of the excavations are of major national and international importance. Project Co-ordinator Services โข Volume 1 dealing with the History of Dublin Castle and volume 2 detailing the archaeology of the pre-Norman or Viking levels at the castle have now been published. This tender relates to closing out Volumes 3 and 4 relating to medieval and post-medieval archaeology (3a and 3b) โข The National Monuments Service now wishes to appoint a Project Co-ordinator to oversee the final stages of completion of Vols 3 and Vol 4. โข It will be the responsibility of the Project Co-ordinator to organise and implement a schedule of work that will result in the completion of the remaining work. This work will be overseen by the Chief Archaeologist within the National Monuments Service and the directors of the excavation will maintain a close liaison with the project.
