Short description:
The East-West Interconnector (EWIC) is a high-voltage direct current (HVDC) interconnector which links the electricity transmission grids of Ireland and Great Britain. It has a power rating of 500 MW and utilizes HVDC Voltage Source Converter technology. EWIC is a fully regulated interconnector which was developed and is owned by EirGrid Interconnector DAC (EIDAC) which is part of the EirGrid Group.

The asset was built and entered into commercial operation in December 2012.
The asset base consists of the following;
โ€ข 500MW Converter Station (Portan, Ireland),
โ€ข 500MW Converter Station (Shotton, GB),
โ€ข High Voltage Cable Spares Facility,
โ€ข 40km HVDC Land Cable in Ireland,
โ€ข 30km HVDC Land Cable in GB,
โ€ข 187km HVDC Marine Cable,
โ€ข 257km Fibre Optic Cable (bundled with cable).
In respect of the above, EIDAC requires Maintenance and Repair Contractor to provide services commencing circa June 2023.

The procurement was conducted in accordance with the negotiated procedure with prior call for competition, pursuant to Article 46 of S.I. No. 286/2016 - European Union (Award of Contracts by Utility Undertakings) Regulations 2016. EirGrid under this agreement is engaging Hitachi to conduct repair and maintenance services on the EWIC assets in Ireland and the UK.
