The NMR spectrometer is required to accelerate the discovery, optimisation and the development of active compounds in diverse fields including active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs), catalysis, biotechnology, all of which are critical to the Irish economy. The UCD School of Chemistry has close to 100 PhD students, 15 postdoctoral fellows, a final year class of 70 students and 12 Taught Masters students in synthetic chemistry, the vast majority (85 %) of whom rely on NMR spectroscopy as a routine and detailed analytical tool. The Applicant Group are not the only NMR spectroscopy users across UCD and it is critical to demonstrate a state of the art NMR Centre for their research programmes in order to be able to attract the best staff to UCD.
