Bord Na Mona

Bord Na Mรณna plc is a state-sponsored body with interests in energy, fuel supply, horticulture, waste management and the environmental markets and is seeking Expressions of Interest for the delivery of Peatland Archaeological Services. The company owns and manages some 80,000 hectares of lands, the majority of which are peatlands. Archaeological survey of the peatlands has resulted in the discovery of a number of sites and structures within peat. The present contract is for Archaeological Services which include the excavation, description, sampling, post-excavation analysis (including palaeoenvironmental analysis), dating and the completion of preliminary and final reports of approximately 100 archaeological sites inactive milled peat areas. The sites, in counties Longford, Offaly, Roscommon and Westmeath, are predominately wooden trackways, toghers and platforms and associated features. The excavation period will be carried out over a 3 year period from 2014 to 2017, with the principal field work being conducted
between April/May and September each year and post- excavation analysis and reporting taking place immediately after. Excavation licences, issued by the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, will be required for each site. The project will be managed by the Bord Na Mรณna Project Archaeologist under the terms of the Code of Practice between the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, the National Museum of Ireland and Bord na Mรณna, and the supplier will be required to attend periodic meetings of Archaeology Management Liaison Committee comprising representatives from Bord na Mona, the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht and the National Museum of Ireland.
