UL0282 - Supply of Polymer composites processing suites

University of Limerick

General Description:
This section describes the acquisition of an integrated polymer composite processing suite of equipment comprising four interrelated and symbiotic processing stages to transform pre-cursor constituent materials into a consolidated polymeric composite structure, vis-à-vis: a polymer melt mixer, extruder, injection moulder and microwave processor. The system will be used in a research capacity at the University of Limerick and should allow collaboration with other Irish and UK universities, other European research institutions and industry.
Technical Specifications. Specific requirements:
The system should have the following:
The polymer mixer will allow melt mixing of small samples of thermoplastic polymers to produce tailored blends and/or incorporate microfillers or nanofillers such as nanoclays, carbon nanotubes (CNTs), and graphene;
The extruder will be used to shape the molten polymer compound into the desired form (pellets, sheets, films etc.);
The injection moulder will produce small test samples for thermo-mechanical analysis and assessment;
The small-scale microwave processor will be used to examine the microwave processability of the newly formulated compounds.
