The Remediation of Unauthorized Landfills at Whitestown, Co. Wicklow
Wicklow County Council
Wicklow County Council plans to remediate unauthorized landfills at Whitestown, Co. Wicklow. The site is a worked out S&G pit and it contains C&D and C&I waste in three zones, Zone A, Zone B and Zone C. The wastes are intermixed with soil. It is planned to excavate and process with trommels or screeners the approx 90,000 tonnes of mixed soil and waste from Zone A and Zone B. The separated wastes will be removed to a licensed landfill for
disposal and recovered inert soil will be retained on-site and used in the restoration of the site. Zone C which comprises an area of approx 15,000 sq. metres will be capped with GGCL, LLDPE and GDL, covered with soil and grass seeded.
