Valentia Road Construction Tender

Met Eireann

Contract: upgrade an existing 820m approx. of roadway and construct a further 730m approx. of roadway.
Met ร‰ireann seeks a contractor to construct approximately 730m of new haul roadway and the upgrading of approximately 820m of existing track to haul roadway standard. The roadway will be a minimum width of 3.6m. The roadway will be required to support vehicles of up to 35 ton which will have to access the site during the construction phase of a new building required at Met ร‰ireann's Air Monitoring facility.
The contract will encompass preparation of the ground, supply of stone and materials to the site and the laying of these materials. It is envisaged that the 820m upgrade will involve the laying of a 'floating road' using a geosynthetic type material which will be then laid over with stone and finished with a finer material. The 730m new roadway will be constructed directly on top of the clay following the removal of the shallow peat layer. This peat layer will be removed during an archaeological investigation of the site. All construction methods proposed will be considered providing technical documentation supporting the the proposal are supplied.
Traffic on the road will be either construction traffic or commercial type vehicles and a black top finish will not be required. Met ร‰ireann would hope that the roadway would eventually โ€˜green upโ€™ so that its visual impact would be minimal. Met ร‰ireannโ€™s long term requirement for this road is to provide day to day access to its site, using a light commercial vehicle.
