In addition to domestic and non-domestic loading from the town, sludges from smaller plants in west Limerick contribute to the current loading at the Newcastle West WWTP. Discharge from the WWTP is to the River Arra. As part of the Newcastle West sewerage Scheme, it is proposed to connect the villages of Ardagh (6km north of Newcastle West) and Castlemahon (4.5km south east of Newcastle West). The agglomeration was issued a wastewater discharge licence by the EPA in November 2009 (EPA ref: D0108-01).
