The watermain network in Cork City is divided into 47 discrete District Meter Zones (DMZs). Cork City Council now wishes to rehabilitate the North Low North(NLN) and North Low East(NLE) DMZs. These DMZs have Unaccounted For Water (UFW) levels consistently in excess of 60 % of the volume of water entering each zone.
The lengths of watermain within or passing through the NLN and NLE DMAs are 18,9 km and 15,5 km respectively. It is estimated that approximately 60 % of these mains were laid during or before the 1950s.
The NLN and NLE DMAs serve domestic populations of 6 000 and 2 000 respectively. The maximum watermain diameter within or passing through each DMA is 600 mm.
The proposed rehabilitation works will be carried out in accordance with Department of the Environment Heritage and Local Government (DOEHLG) Circular L6/07, with a key objective of reducing UFW levels in the North Low North and North Low East DMZs to 25-30 %.
