Survey of Overseas Travellers

Fáilte Ireland-National Tourism Development Authority

The Survey of Overseas Travellers is a survey conducted continuously throughout the year amongst overseas visitors to Ireland. The survey has been conducted annually on a continuous basis since 1972. The objective of the survey is to collect information on the most important traveller and trip characteristics of overseas visitors to Ireland from the major overseas source markets. As the study has been conducted continuously for the past 40 years, we have built up a significant database of tourism statistics that allows us to monitor the major trends in key markets and market segments over a number of years. The data collected is used extensively by Fáilte Ireland, Tourism Ireland Ltd and the tourism industry at large.
This contract involves the collection, analysis and reporting of the trip and traveller characteristics of overseas visitors to Ireland.
— the survey is conducted continuously throughout the year,
— overseas visitors are interviewed when departing the country at the major air and sea ports throughout the republic,
— face to face interviews of between 10 to 15 minutes duration are conducted with a minimum of 6,000 overseas visitors per year,
— Fáilte Ireland requires interim and annual tabular reports and a database for further interrogation and analysis. Fáilte Ireland requires recommendations regarding appropriate software for interrogating the database and it must also be available for use with SPSS software.
